RLT’s holiday tradition returns to celebrate its 40th year! Kids of all ages will love this retelling of the beloved fairy tale, filled with music, laughs, and a sparkle of magic. This musical comedy features elegant costumes and scenery and a cast of memorable characters including some conniving step-relatives, royals, everyone’s favorite resourceful Fairy Godmother, and Ella, of course!
Akeelah has a crazy passion for words: the more abstruse and labyrinthine, the better. But this gift is almost overwhelmed by the challenge of her daily life in a tough, Chicago neighborhood. Akeelah’s aptitude earns her a spot in the National Spelling Bee, which inspires the people in her neighborhood with her courage and tenacity.
Hilarious and heart-warming, this unconventional new comedy tackles love, loss, and coming to terms with growing old. After hooking up at a funeral, Angus and Abigail find themselves waking up the next morning on Angus’ sofa. Enter neighbor Ollie, a former baseball player who now enjoys golf and yoga. Nothing is as it seems with this trio, and every disclosure reveals a new perspective. Set in a Florida retirement community, this charming and big-hearted comedy takes us on an unexpected journey toward a new lease on life.
A pop culture phenomenon comes to the musical stage in Schoolhouse Rock Live! JR. Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher, is nervous about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV, when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music. Inspired by the Emmy Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math and more through clever, tuneful songs, experience Schoolhouse Rock Live! JR. in RLT’s outdoor amphitheatre.
This musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (and the popular 1985 Steven Spielberg film) spotlights Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 40 years forms the arc of this epic story. With a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues, The Color Purple is a story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love, and a celebration of life.
Set in 1964 amidst America's evolving socio-political landscape, Doubt, A Parable unfolds at St. Nicholas Church School in the Bronx. School principal Sister Aloysius Beauvier is staunchly traditional and inflexible in her beliefs. Her world is shaken when she develops grave suspicions about the conduct of Father Flynn, the charismatic and modern parish priest who is beloved by the community for his progressive methods. The drama intensifies as she searches to uncover the truth, setting off a profound moral and ethical conflict. This brilliant and powerful drama received the 2005 Tony Award® for Best Play and the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

How do you smile? With your mouth or with your eyes? Does it show on your face or just on the inside? We all have different ways of showing, sharing and processing our emotions. In RLT’s first Theatre for the Very Young (TVY) production, this delightful show explores how all smiles are unique.
Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.
Thornton Wilder’s iconic, Pulitzer Prize-winning play is reimagined for the 21st century. Our Town depicts the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, through three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage” and “Death and Eternity.” With new layers of language and culture, Our Town expands to encompass everyone in a quintessentially American – and human – story. Presented as the culmination of RLT’s 2024 Teens on Stage and Teens Backstage summer program.
Charlie Price has reluctantly inherited his father’s shoe factory, which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Trying to live up to his father’s legacy and save his family business, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair find that they have more in common than they realized… and discover that when you change your mind, you can change your whole world. In this rock musical, the year is 1972. The place is Pittsburgh, where legendary baseball player Roberto Clemente is at the top of his game. Sam Kowalski and the neighborhood baseball-playing kids are in an intense competition to win the chance to meet Clemente in person. But when their hero helps natural disaster victims in Nicaragua, his fateful off-field actions teach the kids about what is more important than winning.

Set during rehearsals for a major Broadway production, Trouble in Mind illuminates the inner life of a Black actress struggling with her career. She’s paid her dues throughout the years, playing stereotypical supporting roles in second-rate shows, and is ready for her star turn. Alice Childress’s 1955 play – which finally premiered on Broadway in 2021 – is a funny, moving and heartbreaking look at racism, identity and ego in the high-stakes world of New York theatre.

Nate the Great, the world’s greatest boy detective, awakes, hoping that this day will bring a new case. He gets a call from his good friend Annie alerting him that her new painting of her dog Fang is missing! He rushes over to her house to investigate. For the first time in his career, he is stumped. And worse yet, Mom is all out of pancakes. To solve this case, he is going to need to learn to think in new ways and rely on the help of his friends. Nate the Great is a funny, sweet, rollicking good time that celebrates art, friendship, creative thinking, and of course, pancakes.

The Triangle Friends of African American Arts is bringing together several performing arts organizations to showcase the wonderful African American plays and musicals that will hit the stages in 2024. On a Sunday after church, CJ and his Nana board the public bus for their weekly trip across town to help out at a soup kitchen. Along the way, CJ notices the many differences among people and asks tons of curious questions: Why don’t we have a car? How come that man can’t see? How come it’s always so dirty over there? Boston’s Colonial Theatre is host to the opening night performance of a new musical. When the leading lady mysteriously dies on stage, the entire cast and crew become suspects. It is up to a local fast-talking detective, who just happens to be a musical theatre fan, to save the show, solve the case, and maybe even find love, all without getting killed. Packed with glorious tunes from the legendary songwriting team of Kander & Ebb, Curtains is a witty and hilarious musical whodunit that you won’t want to miss!
For seven years, a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs… who just happened to be there too. Presented by RLT’s Teens on Stage and Teens Backstage summer program, Puffs (or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic) is a hilarious and heartfelt tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world.

In the hilarious, hard-fought contest that is Hands on a Hardbody, only one winner can drive away with the American Dream. This roots-rock musical is inspired by the true events of the acclaimed 1997 documentary of the same name by S.R. Bindler, produced by Kevin Morris and Bindler.

Fancy Nancy and her friends Bree, Rhonda, Wanda, and Lionel are going to be performing in their very first show, “Deep Sea Dances.” Nancy is positive, that’s fancy for 100 percent sure, that she and Bree will be picked to be mermaids. When another girl wins the coveted role of the mermaid, Nancy is stuck playing a dreary, dull tree. Can Nancy bring fancy flair to her role, even though it isn’t the one she wanted?

Blood Wedding is a gripping tragedy set in semi-mythical rural Spain from Federico García Lorca. Inspired by a true story and first performed in 1933, this is a classic play that deserves our attention. Two families in rural Spain are intricately bound in an unbreakable cycle of murder and revenge. Violent and long-standing community tensions re-emerge when one mother learns her son – The Groom – is due to marry an ex-lover of the hot-blooded Leonardo Felix, who later steals The Bride away from the wedding celebrations. An entire town goes after the lovers in the middle of the night where pursuers and pursued plunge into a realm of deep darkness where the moonlight is not friendly and the forest not shelter enough. Lorca’s image-laden poetry unfolds the story with the fire and power characteristic of his work and the fateful resonance that marked his own tragically short life.

What would happen if three classic fairy tales – The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears – got a little mixed up between “once upon a time” and “happily ever after?” When the pigs start to wonder what life would be like if the wolf were not always at their door, the billy goats gruff grow tired of trip-trapping over the troll’s bridge, and Papa Bear realizes he’s had enough of meddlesome little Goldilocks, the three trios join forces and swap a few things around! Families will roll with laughter as the narrator and performers juggle the interweaving stories in this fast-paced silly take on traditional favorites.

But can she resist love, especially when that vaguely handsome, mildly amusing, and impossibly aggravating Mr. Darcy keeps popping up at every turn? Literature’s greatest tale of latent love has never felt so theatrical or so full of life than it does in this effervescent and freewheeling adaptation. Because what turns us into greater fools… than the high-stakes game of love?

If you did not receive that email, please contact our box office.** An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.

Xanadu follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first ROLLER DISCO! (Hey, it’s 1980!) But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds.

An elephant named Gerald and a pig named Piggie are the very “bestus” of friends! In this vaudevillian romp, Elephant and Piggie sing their way through a day where anything is possible. They go to a party hosted by the Squirrelles, wear silly hats, learn a new dance, and share ice cream! Their perfect day hits a snag when Gerald accidently breaks Piggie’s new toy and her feelings get hurt. Will their friendship withstand the tragedy of a broken toy? See your favorite moments from the Elephant & Piggie book series come to life in this bouncy and fun musical!

The Velocity of Autumn swirls around Alexandra, an 80-year-old artist in a showdown with her family over where she’ll spend her remaining years. In Alexandra’s corner are her wit, her volcanic passion, and the fact that she’s barricaded herself in her Brooklyn brownstone with enough Molotov cocktails to take out the block. But her children have their own secret weapon: estranged son Chris, who returns after 20 years, crawls through Alexandra’s second-floor window and becomes the family’s unlikely mediator. No sooner are the words “Hi, Mom” uttered than the emotional bombs start detonating. The Velocity of Autumn is a wickedly funny and wonderfully touching discovery of the fragility and ferocity of life.

Beehive celebrates the powerful female voices of the 1960’s with such timeless hits as “My Boyfriend’s Back,” “Be My Baby,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” and “Me and Bobby McGee.” Told from the perspective of six young women who come of age in this enigmatic decade, Beehive takes us from their first Beehive Dance to the challenges we faced as a nation.

Journey into the Forest of Arden for a site-specific, outdoor production of William Shakespeare's As You Like It, a comedy that explores the rollercoaster of falling in love. When Rosalind is banished from her uncle's court, she flees to the Forest of Arden. Disguised as a man, she encounters Orlando, her love interest, in the forest. While in disguise, Rosalind becomes Orlando's teacher, instructing him how to woo the real Rosalind.
In March 2020, no one quite knew what the year ahead would look like. After a lot of difficulties, changes, and creativity, we are proud to have presented an assortment of virtual and in-person shows during the 2020-2021 season. As we ease back into something that more closely resembles a "normal" season at RLT, we can't wait to celebrate the accomplishments of our hardworking and dedicated volunteers over the past year. Join Raleigh Little Theatre and the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra for an outdoor concert-style performance of Jason Robert Brown's Drama Desk award-winner The Last Five Years, presented in RLT's Louise "Scottie" Stephenson Amphitheatre. The Last Five Years is an intimate window into a couple’s doomed marriage. Cathy, a struggling actress, and Jamie, a budding novelist on the brink of wild success, are 20-somethings in New York who meet, fall in love, marry, and divorce over the span of five years. Cathy tells the story from the end of their marriage; Jamie begins from when they first meet. As the musical unfolds, Cathy moves backward in time to the beginning of the relationship as Jamie moves toward the end; they meet only once, in the middle, at their wedding. This show will be performed in the style of a concert, supported by five musicians from the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra.

When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge.

Come see the RLT performance troupe “RLT Players To Go” as they present The Snow White Variety Show by Brian D. Taylor. This show has all the fun of just about every TV show genre you can imagine and is jam-packed into this wild and fast-paced comedy! Audience members will become the live studio audience on a live talk show called, “Real Talk with Fairytale Legends.” The seven dwarves tell the story of Snow White as the Fairytale Players bring it to life.

Based on the true story of the Jena Six; six Black students who were initially charged with attempted murder for a school fight after being provoked with nooses hanging from a tree on campus. This bold ensemble drama examines the miscarriage of justice, racial double standards, the crisis in relations between men and women of all classes and, as a result, the shattering state of Black family life. Blood at the Root employs strong language, racial slurs, and symbols of violence to accurately depict the story of the Jena Six. Parental discretion is advised.

Written by George Brant, Grounded is the story of a hotshot fighter pilot who has to give up flying due to an unexpected pregnancy. She is assigned to fly drones instead, and must juggle the dual realities of killing terrorists by day and going home to her family at night. This production was originally produced by Sonorous Road Productions, stars Michelle Wells, and is directed by Jerome Davis.

The latter is booked to entertain the troops by an unscrupulous agent. Follow each young woman’s story before, during, and after her tour in the war-torn nation. It was named “The most enduring play on Vietnam in the nation,” by The Vietnam Vets Association.
When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion, which results in a tremendous peach. The peach launches James on a journey of enormous proportions. He finds himself among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities, and he embarks on a dangerous voyage. Thanks to James’ quick wit and creative thinking, the residents learn to live and work together as a family.

A young girl dreams about taking flight in the makeshift airplane that she has built in her backyard. After a huge storm, she finds an elderly woman who looks and sounds like a bird, but who just might be Amelia Earhart. The mysterious lady has taken up residence in the cockpit. Using live sound and puppetry, this play reminds us that, with a little imagination, anything is possible.
Brighton, England, 1963. Francis Henshall finds himself employed by small-time gangster Roscoe Crabbe. Roscoe is in town to collect a fee from his fiancée’s gangster father. However, Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother, and she is in love with Stanley Stubbers (her brother’s killer). Stanley, in turn, becomes our hero’s other “guvnor.” How long can Francis keep “Roscoe” and Stanley apart, and will he ever have time to eat dinner?
