Bilbo Baggins, one of the most reserved of all Hobbits, is asked to leave his large, roomy and very dry home in the ground in order to set off as chief robber in an attempt to recover an important treasure. It's the last thing that any sensitive Hobbit would want to do, but a great treasure lies in store – not only for Bilbo, but for all of the Hobbits who inhabit Middle Earth. This 75-minute adaptation of the beloved tale will be a delight to those children and adults who continue to enjoy the magic of Tolkien.
When you love dinosaurs, they pop up everywhere — at the grocery store, at preschool, and even when your grown-ups are hosting a fancy dinner party! But how can you focus on folding your napkin and chewing with your mouth closed when there's an apatosaurus munching on your salad and pterodactyls swarming your soup? You can't! Get ready to find out how even the simplest day-to-day task can turn into an epic dino-tastic adventure that will leave little ones laughing and roaring for more.
Raleigh Little Theatre is thrilled to announce a brand new initiative for the 2025-2026 season: the Second Stage Series. This exciting new series will be dedicated to exploring narratives and themes that are not often part of our mainstage programming. We hope these staged readings will offer an opportunity to engage with bold, often challenging, material that pushes boundaries, explores new perspectives, and broadens the horizons of both our artists and audiences.
Based on the hit movie, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock - The Musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out?
It’s a dark and stormy night, and we’ve been invited to a very unusual dinner party. Each of the guests has an alias, the butler offers a variety of weapons, and the host is, well, dead. So whodunit? Join the iconic oddballs known as Scarlet, Plum, White, Green, Peacock, and Mustard as they race to find the murderer in Boddy Manor before the body count stacks up. Based on the cult classic film and the popular board game, Clue is a madcap comedy that will keep the audience guessing until the final twist.
It's the summer of 1776, and the nation is ready to declare independence... if only our founding fathers can agree to do it! 1776 follows John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia as they attempt to convince the members of the Second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy by signing the Declaration of Independence. The seminal event in American history blazes to vivid life in this most unconventional of Broadway hits. Celebrate the semiquincentennial of the United States at 1776!
Step into a world where everything makes music! Música, Música, Máximo, Música invites young audiences to discover the rhythms of everyday life alongside Máximo and his ukulele-strumming kitten, Mandito. Children are encouraged to listen, move, and explore as familiar sounds transform into rhythm and song. Through music, movement, and Spanish language, the story builds into a joyful celebration of sound and imagination!

1939 Hollywood is abuzz. Legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic, Gone with the Wind, because something’s not right with the script. Summoning both famed screenwriter Ben Hecht and formidable director Victor Fleming, he locks the doors, closes the shades, and on a diet of bananas and peanuts, the three men labor over five frenzied days to fashion a screenplay that will become the blueprint for one of the most successful and beloved films of all time.

"The Wheels on the Bus" is back! Get ready to go “up and down” on a remarkable ride! All aboard, trainees! Bert the Bus Driver is ready to take you all through a town full of colorful characters and comic conundrums in this interactive, immersive play for ages 0 to 5 years old. Get ready to help navigate his route and sing along, of course, as the wipers swish, the horn beeps and passengers move on back.
A charming devil arrives in the quiet village of Edmonton to bargain for the souls of its residents in exchange for their darkest wishes. Elizabeth should be his easiest target, having been labeled a “witch” and cast out by the town, but her soul is not so readily bought. As the devil returns to convince her – and then returns again – unexpected passions flare, alliances are formed, and the village is forever changed. An inventive retelling of a Jacobean drama, this sharp, subversive fable debates how much our souls are worth when hope is hard to come by.

Four quirky teens are competing on the hit TV show Teen Superstars - but just before they go on, they discover some of their songs are missing words! That’s where the audience comes in. You'll suggest a variety of nouns, verbs, and adjectives, and the cast will perform a one-of-a-kind version of the show based on your answers. Every performance is totally different - and totally hilarious!

Following two intertwining love stories – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of immortal King Hades and lady Persephone – Hadestown invites audiences on a journey to the underworld and back through the retelling of a haunting Greek tragedy. Inspired by traditions of classic American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, Hadestown pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. This intriguing and beautiful folk opera delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.
This musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (and the popular 1985 Steven Spielberg film) spotlights Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 40 years forms the arc of this epic story. With a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues, The Color Purple is a story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love, and a celebration of life.

A pop culture phenomenon comes to the musical stage in Schoolhouse Rock Live! Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher, is nervous about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV, when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music. Inspired by the Emmy Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math and more through clever, tuneful songs, experience Schoolhouse Rock Live! in RLT’s outdoor amphitheatre.

Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.
Thornton Wilder’s iconic, Pulitzer Prize-winning play is reimagined for the 21st century. Our Town depicts the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, through three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage” and “Death and Eternity.” With new layers of language and culture, Our Town expands to encompass everyone in a quintessentially American – and human – story. Presented as the culmination of RLT’s 2024 Teens on Stage and Teens Backstage summer program.

In this rock musical, the year is 1972. The place is Pittsburgh, where legendary baseball player Roberto Clemente is at the top of his game. Sam Kowalski and the neighborhood baseball-playing kids are in an intense competition to win the chance to meet Clemente in person. But when their hero helps natural disaster victims in Nicaragua, his fateful off-field actions teach the kids about what is more important than winning.

Set during rehearsals for a major Broadway production, Trouble in Mind illuminates the inner life of a Black actress struggling with her career. She’s paid her dues throughout the years, playing stereotypical supporting roles in second-rate shows, and is ready for her star turn. Alice Childress’s 1955 play – which finally premiered on Broadway in 2021 – is a funny, moving and heartbreaking look at racism, identity and ego in the high-stakes world of New York theatre.

And worse yet, Mom is all out of pancakes. To solve this case, he is going to need to learn to think in new ways and rely on the help of his friends. On a Sunday after church, CJ and his Nana board the public bus for their weekly trip across town to help out at a soup kitchen. Boston’s Colonial Theatre is host to the opening night performance of a new musical. When the leading lady mysteriously dies on stage, the entire cast and crew become suspects. It is up to a local fast-talking detective, who just happens to be a musical theatre fan, to save the show, solve the case, and maybe even find love, all without getting killed. Packed with glorious tunes from the legendary songwriting team of Kander & Ebb, Curtains is a witty and hilarious musical whodunit that you won’t want to miss!
For seven years, a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs… who just happened to be there too. Presented by RLT’s Teens on Stage and Teens Backstage summer program, Puffs (or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic) is a hilarious and heartfelt tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world.

In the hilarious, hard-fought contest that is Hands on a Hardbody, only one winner can drive away with the American Dream. This roots-rock musical is inspired by the true events of the acclaimed 1997 documentary of the same name by S.R. Bindler, produced by Kevin Morris and Bindler.

Performances just added on April 1 & 2! Fancy Nancy and her friends Bree, Rhonda, Wanda, and Lionel are going to be performing in their very first show, “Deep Sea Dances.” Nancy is positive, that’s fancy for 100 percent sure, that she and Bree will be picked to be mermaids. When another girl wins the coveted role of the mermaid, Nancy is stuck playing a dreary, dull tree. Can Nancy bring fancy flair to her role, even though it isn’t the one she wanted?

Blood Wedding is a gripping tragedy set in semi-mythical rural Spain from Federico García Lorca. Inspired by a true story and first performed in 1933, this is a classic play that deserves our attention. Two families in rural Spain are intricately bound in an unbreakable cycle of murder and revenge. Violent and long-standing community tensions re-emerge when one mother learns her son – The Groom – is due to marry an ex-lover of the hot-blooded Leonardo Felix, who later steals The Bride away from the wedding celebrations. An entire town goes after the lovers in the middle of the night where pursuers and pursued plunge into a realm of deep darkness where the moonlight is not friendly and the forest not shelter enough. Lorca’s image-laden poetry unfolds the story with the fire and power characteristic of his work and the fateful resonance that marked his own tragically short life.

RLT’s holiday tradition returns for the 38th year! This musical comedy is a holiday sugarplum for the whole family. Just the right mixture of comedy and romance can add the sparkle of magic to your holiday season. This visually stunning musical combines elegant costumes and scenery with singing, dancing, conniving step-relatives, and resourceful fairy folk. This version of Cinderella is the perfect family outing during the holiday season, with the Royal Ball taking place on Christmas Eve. Join the cast in singing "We Wish You a Merry a Christmas," and come celebrate the holidays at RLT!
Raleigh Little Theatre’s Artistic Director Patrick Torres will be leaving RLT at the end of November to join Creative Action in Austin as their next Executive Director. Help us give Patrick a proper send-off as we celebrate his contributions to RLT and the greater Triangle theatre community!
What would happen if three classic fairy tales – The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears – got a little mixed up between “once upon a time” and “happily ever after?” When the pigs start to wonder what life would be like if the wolf were not always at their door, the billy goats gruff grow tired of trip-trapping over the troll’s bridge, and Papa Bear realizes he’s had enough of meddlesome little Goldilocks, the three trios join forces and swap a few things around! Families will roll with laughter as the narrator and performers juggle the interweaving stories in this fast-paced silly take on traditional favorites.

While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.

(Hey, it’s 1980!) But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds.

Journey into the Forest of Arden for a site-specific, outdoor production of William Shakespeare's As You Like It, a comedy that explores the rollercoaster of falling in love. When Rosalind is banished from her uncle's court, she flees to the Forest of Arden. Disguised as a man, she encounters Orlando, her love interest, in the forest. While in disguise, Rosalind becomes Orlando's teacher, instructing him how to woo the real Rosalind.
In March 2020, no one quite knew what the year ahead would look like. After a lot of difficulties, changes, and creativity, we are proud to have presented an assortment of virtual and in-person shows during the 2020-2021 season. Join Raleigh Little Theatre and the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra for an outdoor concert-style performance of Jason Robert Brown's Drama Desk award-winner The Last Five Years, presented in RLT's Louise "Scottie" Stephenson Amphitheatre. The Last Five Years is an intimate window into a couple’s doomed marriage. Cathy, a struggling actress, and Jamie, a budding novelist on the brink of wild success, are 20-somethings in New York who meet, fall in love, marry, and divorce over the span of five years. Cathy tells the story from the end of their marriage; Jamie begins from when they first meet. As the musical unfolds, Cathy moves backward in time to the beginning of the relationship as Jamie moves toward the end; they meet only once, in the middle, at their wedding. This show will be performed in the style of a concert, supported by five musicians from the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra.

When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge.

Based on the true story of the Jena Six; six Black students who were initially charged with attempted murder for a school fight after being provoked with nooses hanging from a tree on campus. This bold ensemble drama examines the miscarriage of justice, racial double standards, the crisis in relations between men and women of all classes and, as a result, the shattering state of Black family life. Blood at the Root employs strong language, racial slurs, and symbols of violence to accurately depict the story of the Jena Six. Parental discretion is advised.

Also, Junie has trouble reading the blackboard and she might need glasses. This is a delightful adaptation of Barbara Park’s best-selling books. They are brought to life in a genuinely comical musical.

Angelo lusts after Claudio’s sister, Isabella, an aspiring nun, and gives her an ultimatum: give up her chastity or her brother dies. Her decision ignites an exploration of agency, abuse of power, and the intersection of virtue and sin in one of Shakespeare’s great plays.

Written by George Brant, Grounded is the story of a hotshot fighter pilot who has to give up flying due to an unexpected pregnancy. She is assigned to fly drones instead, and must juggle the dual realities of killing terrorists by day and going home to her family at night. This production was originally produced by Sonorous Road Productions, stars Michelle Wells, and is directed by Jerome Davis.

The latter is booked to entertain the troops by an unscrupulous agent. Follow each young woman’s story before, during, and after her tour in the war-torn nation. It was named “The most enduring play on Vietnam in the nation,” by The Vietnam Vets Association.
When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion, which results in a tremendous peach. The peach launches James on a journey of enormous proportions. He finds himself among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities, and he embarks on a dangerous voyage. Thanks to James’ quick wit and creative thinking, the residents learn to live and work together as a family.

A young girl dreams about taking flight in the makeshift airplane that she has built in her backyard. After a huge storm, she finds an elderly woman who looks and sounds like a bird, but who just might be Amelia Earhart. The mysterious lady has taken up residence in the cockpit. Using live sound and puppetry, this play reminds us that, with a little imagination, anything is possible.
Brighton, England, 1963. Francis Henshall finds himself employed by small-time gangster Roscoe Crabbe. Roscoe is in town to collect a fee from his fiancée’s gangster father. However, Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother, and she is in love with Stanley Stubbers (her brother’s killer). Stanley, in turn, becomes our hero’s other “guvnor.” How long can Francis keep “Roscoe” and Stanley apart, and will he ever have time to eat dinner?
