Job Openings: Teens on Stage/Teens Backstage

Raleigh Little Theatre seeks candidates for several positions within the summer education program, Teens on Stage and Teens Backstage. Please read below for details!

About TOS/TBS

Every summer, Raleigh Little Theatre holds a 5-week theatre intensive for ages 14-18 in which high school age students participate in classes and apply their learning to a fully realized production. This year’s program will culminate in a production of Puffs!

Teens on Stage (TOS) classes may focus on movement, voice and speech, text analysis, devising and advanced acting. Teens Backstage (TBS) participants are engaged in all areas of technical theatre including set construction, costume construction, prop building, lighting, sound, and scenic painting. Teens Backstage also builds the set and many costumes under the supervision of the Technical Director and design team.

The Teens on Stage / Teens Backstage program is designed to further students’ theatrical training by connecting theatre classes to production work and to develop students as theatre artists by connecting theatre to the world and society. The program is a good fit for a variety of theatre experience levels and the RLT education team believes this variety makes the program even stronger. Our goal is that this intensive theatre-making experience serves students’ goals in theatre and the arts and also in developing their communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills that can be used in a variety of ways in their lives.

Open Positions

We are still seeking candidates for the following position:

TBS Costume Designer/Supervisor

During the duration of the camp (4 weeks) the Costume Designer will be present in the costume shop for the agreed upon number of hours per week to instruct/mentor the TBS campers in design and build technique.

  • Designing and building the looks of the show costumes; effectively communicating design concepts with production team and camp participants using an agreed upon method (drawings, lookbook, etc…) by the due date as set;
  • Work as their own shop manager and coordinate with TBS students in learning and using them as workforce.
  • Approving or providing input on hair and make-up design to compliment the costume design.
  • Coordinate with RLT staff on budget and purchase of all materials needed before the start of the camp.
  • The Costume Designer will be available for all production and design meetings, all fittings, and all technical rehearsals.
  • They will be expected to include the TBS camp participants in building/preparing for the show.
  • During tech, the designer will mentor the TBS camp participant(s) in charge of wardrobe in quick change techniques and item tracking.

Compensation: $2,500

Teaching Artist

The teaching artist is responsible for reading, understanding, and referring to the Teaching Artist Handbook and curriculum guides provided by RLT Education Staff in the course of their instruction. The Instructor shall render all services in a competent, conscientious and professional manner to the best of their ability.

This summer we will be looking for two teaching artists to teach TOS participants one of the following topics

  • The Actors Voice: Dialect and Accents
  • Movement for the Actor

Compensation: $35/hr

TOS participants will be split in 2 groups, with two 1.5 hour sessions of instruction held each day, Monday-Friday, from 9:30 am – 12:45 pm, June 26 – July 14 (excluding July 4).

Stage Manager

Your primary duties include and are not limited to: Attending all rehearsals where blocking, choreography, fight choreography are being conducted. Participate in, or attend in paper tech. Prepare a Stage Manager call book with all necessary paperwork relevant to the production. Document all rehearsals, attendance, and produce any paperwork needed to execute the show to fulfill crew needs.

The Stage Manager shall attend all rehearsals where blocking, choreography, or fight choreography are conducted, and all weekly production meetings. The Stage Manager will be available for auditions, scheduled rehearsals, and Paper Tech.

Compensation: $1500

Assistant Director

General duties include assisting the Director in managing rehearsals and supporting the creation of the production as a unified artistic concept that is in line with RLT’s mission and values. The Assistant Director will attend weekly production meetings, rehearsals, tech rehearsals and other design meetings, as requested and scheduled by the Director.

Compensation: $1000

Technical Director/Head of TBS

During the duration of the camp (4 weeks) the Technical Director will be present in the scene shop for the agreed upon number of hours per week to instruct/mentor the TBS campers in design and build technique.

  • The Technical Director/Head of TBS is the primary supervisor of participants in the Teens Backstage program during program hours, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm.
  • Facilitate and coordinate designs (props, lighting, scenic, sound etc) with designers to be built with the TBS participants
  • Encourage TBS to document their TBS process to be included in their final portfolio
  • Meet with the production’s Director to determine overall needs and requirements of the show and coordinate with designers to produce any paperwork needed to execute the show and needed by the stage manager to fulfill crew needs.
  • Technical Director will complete or supervise completion of show painting as possible by first tech.
  • The Technical Director will be available for all production and design meetings and all technical rehearsals.

Compensation: $2,500

Scenic Design/Props Designer

During the duration of the camp (4 weeks) the Scenic/Prop Designer will be present during the agreed upon number of hours per week to instruct/mentor the TBS campers in design and build technique.

  • The Scenic/Prop Designer will be responsible for designing the show and building props.
  • Report to the Technical Director to make sure they have all necessary materials to build props.
  • Meeting with the production’s Director and designers to determine overall needs and requirements of the show
  • The Designer shall be available for all production meetings, scheduled design runs, and technical rehearsals and for any work calls to direct work as deemed necessary.
  • The Designer is expected to assist in the restoration of the theatre at strike.
  • The Designer will also serve as a teaching artist in their specialty for TBS.
  • During tech, the designer will mentor the TBS camp participant(s) in charge of props.

Compensation: $1000

Teaching Artist: Props or Scenic Focus (1 day)

The teaching artist is responsible for reading, understanding, and referring to the Teaching Artist Handbook provided by RLT Education Staff in the course of their instruction. The Instructor shall render all services in a competent, conscientious and professional manner to the best of their ability. The props/scenic teaching artist is responsible for creating a 1 day class for beginner to intermediate students in TBS.

Compensation: $35/hr

The Scenic/Prop Teaching Artist will be expected to teach a session for TBS participants from 1:15 pm – 4:45 pm on a date to be scheduled between 6/26 and 7/7.

Teaching Artist: Costume Focus (1 Week)

The teaching artist is responsible for reading, understanding, and referring to the Teaching Artist Handbook provided by RLT Education Staff in the course of their instruction. The Instructor shall render all services in a competent, conscientious and professional manner to the best of their ability. The props/scenic teaching artist is responsible for creating a 1 week class for beginner to intermediate students in TBS.

Compensation: $35/hr

The Costume Teaching Artist will be expected to teach 1-2 sessions for TBS participants from 1:15 pm – 4:45 pm on a date(s) to be scheduled between 6/26 and 7/7.

Sound Designer

During the duration of the camp (4 weeks), the sound designer will be present during the agreed upon number of hours per week to instruct/mentor the TBS campers in design and build technique.

  • The Designer will report to the Technical Director to make sure they have all necessary materials and coordinate schedule
  • Meeting with the production’s Director and designers to determine overall needs and requirements of the show
  • Producing any paperwork needed to execute the show. Setup and restoration of the sound system and needed by the stage manager to fulfill crew needs.
  • The Designer shall be available for all production meetings, scheduled design runs, and Technical Rehearsals.
  • The Designer will also serve as a teaching artist in their specialty for TBS.
  • During tech, the designer will mentor the TBS camp participant(s) in charge of running the sound board.

Compensation: $500

Teaching Artist: Sound Focus (1 day)

The teaching artist is responsible for reading, understanding, and referring to the Teaching Artist Handbook provided by RLT Education Staff in the course of their instruction. The Instructor shall render all services in a competent, conscientious and professional manner to the best of their ability. The sound teaching artist is responsible for creating a 1 day class for beginner to intermediate students in TBS.

Compensation: $35/hr

The Sound Designer will be expected to teach a session for TBS participants from 1:15 pm – 4:45 pm on a date to be scheduled between 6/26 and 7/7.

Lighting Designer

During the duration of the camp (4 weeks) the lighting designer will be present during the agreed upon number of hours per week to instruct/mentor the TBS campers in design and build technique.

  • The Designer will report to the Technical Director to make sure they have all necessary materials and coordinate schedule
  • Meeting with the production’s Director and designers to determine overall needs and requirements of the show
  • Produce any paperwork needed to execute the show and needed by the Stage Manager to fulfill crew needs.
  • The Designer will complete or supervise completion of lighting hang and focus by first tech, unless alternate arrangements are made with the Technical Director.
  • The Lighting Designer shall be available for all production meetings, scheduled design runs, and technical rehearsals and for any lighting work calls to direct work as deemed necessary. The Designer is expected to assist in the restoration of electrics at strike.
  • The Designer will also serve as a teaching artist in their specialty for TBS.
  • During tech, the designer will mentor the TBS camp participant(s) in charge of running the light board

Compensation: $1000

Teaching Artist: Topic: Lighting (1 day)

The teaching artist is responsible for reading, understanding, and referring to the Teaching Artist Handbook provided by RLT Education Staff in the course of their instruction. The Instructor shall render all services in a competent, conscientious and professional manner to the best of their ability. The lighting teaching artist is responsible for creating a 1 day class for beginner to intermediate students in TBS.

Compensation: $35/hr

The Lighting Teaching Artist will be expected to teach a session for TBS participants from 1:15 pm – 4:45 pm on a date to be scheduled between 6/26 and 7/7.
