Beyond the Stage Door Field Trips

Raleigh Little Theatre offers field trips for grades K-12!

Field trips run from 10:00AM-12:30PM on the date you book and include a workshop and a tour experience for a maximum of 30 students per day. The two-hour field trip includes a drama workshop + a backstage tour for students.

Note: Your booking is only finalized once you receive confirmation from our team and return a signed booking agreement.

Workshops

Field trips consist of a backstage tour and a workshop experience. When booking your field trip, you can choose from the following workshop topics:

  • Stories Alive (grades K-5): Students will participate in theatre exercises designed to sharpen skills every actor needs to bring a story to life using their body, voice and imagination.
NC Essential Standards: Theatre Arts C.1.1, C.1.2
  • Actor’s Toolbox (grades 3-8): Students will engage the actor’s tools of body, voice and imagination to create characters and short scenes. Fun theatre games help to reinforce the value of focus and the importance of teamwork.
NC Essential Standards: Theatre Arts C.1.1, C.1.2, C.2.1
  • Intro to Improvisation (grades 5-12): Through collaborative theatre activities, students will practice the necessary skills for improvisation including listening, making strong choices, spontaneity and the golden rule of improv: saying yes to the scene to create a story!
NC Essential Standards: Theatre Arts C.1.1, C.1.2, C.2.1

Backstage Tour

In this engaging one-hour backstage tour, students explore the hidden world of theatre beyond the curtain! The tour includes our two theatres (Sutton Theatre and Gaddy Theatre), backstage areas, the costume shop, and scene shop. They’ll step onto both of our stages to experience the actor’s perspective and learn about the many behind-the-scenes roles that bring a production to life. New this year, our Sensory/Tactile bins in the Scene and Costume Shops allow students to SEE real props used in past performances and to TOUCH a variety of costume fabrics.

NC Essential Standards: Theatre Arts AE.1.1, AE.1.2, CU.2.1, CU.2.2

Lunch

Between the workshop and the theatre, there is a brief break for restroom use. Your group is welcome to have lunch outdoors in the Amphitheater or Rose Garden after the workshop and tour experiences conclude. Each group will need to supply their own lunches. No food or drink is available to purchase on site.

Cost

The total cost of the two-hour field trip is based on the number of students:

  • Groups of up to 30 participants: $400 (includes workshop + tour)
  • Groups larger than 30 participants: Must be split across multiple days. We are only able to accommodate 30 students at a time in our facility (no exceptions) including parents/chaperones.

Note: Wake County Public Schools can apply for transportation funding for a field trip to RLT through the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County. See their Wheels on the Bus grant page for details.

Chaperones/Accompanying Adults

Groups attending an RLT field trip should have a minimum of 2 adults with them. We ask that you not exceed 8 adults per day unless cleared in advance of your visit with the education staff.
