Auditions: Moonlight and Magnolias
Raleigh Little Theatre is seeking performers for its upcoming production of Moonlight and Magnolias, by Ron Hutchinson. This show will be presented February 6-22, 2026, in the Gaddy-Goodwin Teaching Theatre.
About the show
1939 Hollywood is abuzz. Legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic, Gone with the Wind, because something’s not right with the script. Summoning both famed screenwriter Ben Hecht and formidable director Victor Fleming, he locks the doors, closes the shades, and on a diet of bananas and peanuts, the three men labor over five days to fashion a screenplay that will become the blueprint for one of the most successful and beloved films of all time.
MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC, servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection. (www.dramatists.com)
Directed by Betsy Henderson

About the roles
Although Ben Hecht, Victor Fleming and David O. Selznick were real people and this play is based on real events, Raleigh Little Theatre encourages actors of all ethnicities, identities, and abilities to audition for any role. If the script requires strict adherence to any characteristic(s), those will be listed in the descriptions below. These descriptions are the character descriptions for the actors in the play.
Ben Hecht (Male Presenting; Age range: late 20’s-40’s): A screenwriter and playwright. He hasn’t read the novel the film Gone with the Wind is based on and thinks the film is doomed to failure. As a proud Jewish activist, he struggles with applying his ideals of social justice to the story. A cynical, sarcastic person who often butts heads with Victor Fleming.
Victor Fleming (Male Presenting, Age range: 40-50’s): An action movie Hollywood director who Selznick has just pulled away from The Wizard of Oz to work on Gone with the Wind. Confident in his ability to direct, known as a “man’s director.” Boisterous but a Company Man to the studio bosses, having gotten his start as a mechanic and chauffeur.
David O. Selznick (Male Presenting, Age Range: must be able to play 30-40’s): Gone With The Wind’s driven movie producer and son-in-law of the studio boss, Louis B. Mayer. Through questionable motives, he cares about getting the minutia of the movie exactly right. He will do anything to make Gone with the Wind a hit.
Miss Poppenghul (Female Presenting, Age Range: 30-50’s): The tireless, long-suffering and exceptionally efficient assistant of Mr. Selznick. She is constantly on-call and fulfills each request made during the men’s five-day confinement – but it does take its toll.
