About the roles
Raleigh Little Theatre encourages actors of any ethnicity, identity, ability, etc. to audition for any role. If the script requires strict adherence to any characteristic(s), those will be listed in the character description. The characteristics describe the characters in the play.
CINDERELLA (Female, Age presenting 18-25) A smart and idealistic young woman who loves to read and loves math. She is fond of dancing, loves art and music, and longs to see the world—but like all of us from time to time, she’s stuck in a bad situation and needs help.
PRINCE CHARMING (Male, Age presenting 18-30) A smart, handsome young man who is lonely. While he longs to find that “certain someone” to cherish and to share his royal life with him, he’s not terribly happy about having to find her under a deadline.
KING/QUEEN DARLING III (Female or Male, Age presenting 30+) He or she may “rule their land with a gentle hand” but they are determined that their recalcitrant son WILL marry by his 21st birthday, according to the law. Looking for a character with a big personality who performs their musical number with comic aplomb. (Possible inspirations: Queen Charlotte from Bridgerton, Kevin Hart, Robin Williams, Amy Schumer, Beyoncé, Judy Dench, Steve Carrell, Leslie Jones, Kristin Wiig, etc.)
STEPMAMA (Female, Age presenting 30+) Just adores her daughters, but Cinderella? Not so much. Stepmama considers herself beautiful, refined and cultured—a stark contrast to what others see. An actor with comedy chops and a lot of attitude!
THE STEPSISTERS: HENRIETTA and GERTRUDE (Female, Age presenting 20+) These scene-stealers delight our audiences every year. There are minor differences between the young ladies. HENRIETTA is the oldest and “wisest,” whereas GERTRUDE is “prettier” and ditzier. Two actors with broad comic style, including some physical comedy.
FAIRY GODMOTHER (Female, Age presenting 25+) A clever, energetic fairy with a sparkly wand, magical incantations, and a few unexpected tricks up her sleeve. She takes Cinderella under her wing, blending magic with a bit of motherly advice. Soprano.
THE HELPERS: SUGAR and SPICE (Any gender, Age presenting Teen+) Fairy Godmother’s assistants who help her screen potential recipients of magical aid, run errands around the kingdom, and disguise themselves as mortals when necessary. Two actors with good humor, playful nature, ability to improvise, and some ability to dance.
PAGES (Any gender, Age presenting Teen+) Two loyal assistants who accompany the Royals and are their “backups” for a musical number.
SCRIBES (Any gender, Age presenting Teen+) Gossip writers who report on what goes on in court. The “reporters” of the era.
TOWN KIDS, MICE & HORSES (Children Ages 7-12) Looking for 4. Can you dance like a regular kid? Can you sing like a little mouse? Can you trot around the stage like a horse—neighing and shaking your long silky mane? Versatile youths.
ENSEMBLE (All genders, Ages 15+) Townsfolk liven up the village square, singing and swaying to a lively holiday tune. When in attendance at the Castle ballroom, they appear as proper court nobles in beautiful outfits, performing traditional ballroom dances that are fun and easy to learn: Polonaise, Waltz, Minuet, and the ever-popular Sneeze Polka.
