Soar! The Hero Pigeons of WWI
By Judy M. Dove
With Student Cast from Raleigh Little Theatre
Performed in area libraries, January-March 2017
Soar! The Hero Pigeons of WWI commemorates the 100th anniversary of the United States entering WWI on April 6, 1917, by retelling the true story of Cher Ami, a carrier pigeon who became a war hero. This short play recounts the story of the Lost Battalion, the name given to the U.S. 77th Division, as they were trapped by the Germans in the Argonne Forest in France in October of 1918. The unit was saved by a pigeon who, despite being shot, was able to regain flight to successfully deliver a message for help. The story is told from the pigeons’ perspectives and is appropriate for ages five and older.
