The Miss Firecracker Contest

By Beth Henley

February 10 – 26, 2012

Carnelle Scott of Brookhaven, Mississippi, wants nothing more than to be crowned Miss Firecracker in the beauty pageant at the town’s annual Independence Day celebration. To this end, she has whipped up a talent-show act in which she tap dances and somersaults to ”The Star-Spangled Banner” while clenching a sparkler in her teeth. Welcome to an evening of humor, alternately Southern-Gothic absurdist, a bittersweet study of Southern characters and a slapstick send-up to Miss America ideals. From Beth Henley, author of Crimes of the Heart.
