RLT Seeks Sound Designer for Teens Backstage 2021
Seeking a Sound Designer for Teens Backstage 2021
Raleigh Little Theatre seeks a Sound Designer to work with the Teens on Stage / Teens Backstage program in summer 2021.
About the Program
Together, Teens on Stage (TOS) and Teens Backstage (TBS) form RLT’s intensive six-week summer program that provides theatrical training and mentoring to teens. The program team’s approach prioritizes the agency of the youth participants and is grounded in the belief that young people are valuable creative collaborators. This approach supports the development of youth theatre artists as it engages them in critical thinking, creative problem solving and a community-centered environment that recognizes what each person brings to the collaboration.
TOS is an intensive experience for high school actors that combines classes in advanced acting, voice and movement with rehearsal, culminating in a fully realized production. TBS is the technical theatre component of the program in which a select number of high school students are immersed in all areas of technical theatre and production and work on all aspects of the summer production, including serving as production run crew for performances.
The 2021 TOS/TBS production is Shakespeare’s As You Like It, performed outdoors in the Louise “Scottie” Stephenson Amphitheatre and Raleigh Rose Garden.
The program runs June 19-August 1 and specific hours and dates are listed here on the participant conflict calendar, which Sound Designer applicants can review.
About the Position
The Sound Designer is a member of the production team responsible for designing the sound for the show as well as instructing TBS participants in sound engineering skills and design principles. Interested TBS students may participate as an assistant sound designer if that is of mutual interest to the Sound Designer and students. The Sound Designer is not responsible for attending or running the performances. Through the TOS / TBS program, participants will be taught the skills necessary to produce a live theatrical performance.
The TBS participants meet Monday through Friday from 2-8pm and sound design instructional time would be scheduled within these hours in the program dates. At minimum, the Sound Designer would need to be available for 2.5 hours each day for one week of the program and at least partial availability during technical rehearsals the week of July 19 (tech hours are 5-9pm).
Sound Design instruction with TBS students typically takes place on one or more Saturdays of the program for half a day at a time. At least partial availability during technical rehearsals (July 20-23, 9am-5pm) is required. Please include specific availability for that week in your cover letter. Candidates must be at least 18 years old. Sound Designers are compensated a stipend of $1000 for their time and are given 4 tickets to attend the production.
Please send a resume of experience relevant to the position, a one-page cover letter detailing your interest in the position and availability during program dates to RLT’s production manager and technical director, Dennis Berfield at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Application Deadline: April 15, 2021
