Open Positions with RLT’s Teens on Stage and Teens Backstage Program

Raleigh Little Theatre seeks candidates for the following positions within the summer education program, Teens on Stage and Teens Backstage: Assistant Director, Teens Backstage Teaching Assistant and Sound Designer.

Teens on Stage is an intensive experience for high school actors that combines classes in advanced acting, voice and movement with rehearsal, culminating in a fully realized production in the Gaddy Goodwin Teaching Theatre. Teens Backstage is the technical theatre component of the program in which a select number of high school students are immersed in all areas of technical theatre and production and work on all aspects of the summer production, including serving as production run crew for performances.

The 2020 production is Lost Girl by Kimberly Belflower.

Program dates

The Summer 2020 program dates are:

Teens on Stage/Teens Backstage Kick Off Day:

  • Saturday, June 20 10am-4pm

Evening Rehearsals for Teens on Stage:

  • June 22-26 7pm-9pm

Teens on Stage Program Dates:

  • Mon–Fri, June 29-July 24 (no July 3), 9am – 5pm
  • Tech Saturday: July 18, 9am – 5pm

Teens Backstage Program Dates:

  • Tue-Sat, June 23-July 18 (no July 3), 9am – 5pm
  • Mon-Fri, July 20-24, 9am – 5pm (technical rehearsals)

Performance Dates:

  • July 23 @ 7:30pm (preview)
  • July 24, 25, 31, Aug 1 @ 7:30pm
  • July 26, Aug 1, 2 @ 3pm

Assistant Director

The assistant director works closely with the director/education director to plan and lead rehearsal time, work one-on-one with actors on specific goals, and lead cast warm ups. This position is ideal for emerging directors with a strong interest in working with teens. Candidates must have regular availability on weekdays between 1 and 5pm during the Teens on Stage program dates. Please note any known calendar conflicts with the program dates in your cover letter. Candidates must be at least 18 years old. The assistant director receives a stipend as compensation for their time. The AD also receives 2 preview tickets and 2 comp tickets to use during the run of the show.

Teens Backstage Teaching Assistant

The Teens Backstage (TBS) teaching assistant works closely with the TBS Technical Director to accomplish the production build and contribute to a positive and meaningful learning experience for all TBS participants. The TBS teaching assistant will also serve as the props master on the production. Candidates must be at least 18 years old. A stipend and/or college credit if desired, is available as compensation. The TA also receives 2 preview tickets and 2 comp tickets to use during the run of the show.

Sound Designer

The Sound Designer is a member of the production team responsible for designing the sound for the show as well as instructing Teens Backstage (TBS) participants in sound engineering skills and design principles. Interested TBS students may participate as an assistant sound designer if that is of mutual interest to the Sound Designer and students. The Sound Designer is not responsible to attend or run any of the performances. Through the TOS / TBS program, participants will be taught the skills necessary to produce a live theatrical performance.

Sound Design instruction with TBS students typically takes place on one or more Saturdays of the program for half a day at a time. At least partial availability during technical rehearsals (July 20-23, 9am-5pm) is required. Please include specific availability for that week in your cover letter. Candidates must be at least 18 years old. Sound Designers are compensated for their time (based on experience) and are given up to 4 tickets to attend the production.
