Welcome to summer! We might be social distancing but we can still have fun!

Having fun in Ms Danielle’s Story Drama class

After careful consideration of the health and safety guidelines for summer camps and requirements for physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, Raleigh Little Theatre has decided that virtual engagement is the safest way for us to hold our June summer camps. The safety of our students, teaching artists, staff and families is of utmost importance, and Raleigh Little Theatre is committed to providing a space for learning, self-expression and connection with others through drama and theatre.

While we cannot replace the highly social, energetic and collaborative environment that a full, in-person summer camp experience brings, we have been pleasantly surprised by how much drama and theatre we ARE able to do using technology. We still believe theatre is an excellent vehicle for human connection, and we need that now more than ever.

In order to facilitate engaging drama learning experiences for students, our virtual camp offerings consist of live, collaborative class time over video that prompt students’ creativity off the screen.

Example Morning Camp schedule:

9:00-10:15am: Class on Zoom
10:15-10:45am: Break (offline)
10:45am-12:00pm: Class on Zoom

Example Afternoon Camp schedule:

1:00-2:15pm: Class on Zoom
2:15-2:45pm: Break (offline)
2:45-4:00pm: Class on Zoom

Available Online Camps

The following June camps are open for enrollment. All classes will meet online via Zoom, with additional digital materials provided through Google Classroom. Virtual camps are facilitated by RLT’s professional teaching artists.

Create a Play (Gr 1-3)

This half day camp will combine creative drama work with acting skill development. Using source material from books and their own imaginations, students will work together with their peers to create an original story to perform at the end of the week. Students will engage the actor’s tools of body, voice and imagination as they create stories and bring characters to life in their living room.

June 15-19, 9:00am-12:00pm:
Fractured Fairytales

June 29 – July 2, 1:00-4:00pm:
Quests and Heroes

Scriptworks (Gr 4-6): The Wizard of Oz

June 15-19, 1:00-4:00pm

Students will develop essential acting skills including characterization, vocal projection, working collaboratively and memorizing lines while working on age-relevant scenes from published plays.

Musical Theatre Ensemble

This half day virtual camp will focus on the storytelling and dance elements of musical theatre as students learn and practice choreography and work together to devise original scenes to tell a story with songs from popular musicals.

Grades 7-9:
June 15-19, 1:00-4:00pm
A Wicked Mash Up

Grades 4-6:
June 29-July 2, 9:00am-12:00pm
A Broadway Mystery

Theatre Arts Skill Sampler

Grades 1-3:
June 22-26, 9:30am-12:00pm

Grades 4-6:
June 22-26, 1:00-3:30pm

Students will experience the four art forms of drama, dance, music and visual art in a rotating schedule. Each day, they will have two live classes that meet virtually and receive pre-recorded instructional videos in the other two art forms. All art forms will meet 2 to 3 times over the course of the week. As students learn from four excellent instructors, they will experience class with the same group of students and work together as the week progresses to share their work with each other on Friday.

* Tuition includes all materials needed for live art classes through a contactless pick up process at RLT.

July and August Camp Information

Raleigh Little Theatre is making the decisions about summer camps being online or in person on a monthly basis as we explore what we can accomplish safely in person while following health guidelines. If you are currently signed up for a July or August camp, you can expect to hear from us in the coming weeks. If we are not able to hold camp in person, a virtual option will be offered for each camp we have scheduled for the summer.
