Sutton Series

Five shows with reserved seating performed in the Cantey V. Sutton Main Stage Theatre.

Ruthless! The Musical (musical)

By Joel Paley and Marvin Laird
Cantey V. Sutton Main Stage Theatre
August 12 - 28, 2011 (11 performances)

Eight-year-old Tina Denmark, the greatest song-and-dance sensation to ever hit the third grade, has her heart set on the title role in her school musical, “Pippi (Longstocking) in Tahiti.” When Louise Lerman, a thoroughly untalented third grader wins the role, the ruthless Tina kills her much to the dismay of her mother, a wimpy, dull, and untalented housewife mother, and the approval of Sylvia St. Croix, Tina's equally ruthless sleazy agent who nurses her aspirations of stardom. This aggressively outrageous musical hit, a parody of The Bad Seed, Gypsy, All About Eve, Mame, and a host of other shows garnered rave reviews during its long Off Broadway run.

For details and tickets, go to the Ruthless! show page.

The Woman in Black (thriller)

Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt
from the book by Susan Hill

Cantey V. Sutton Main Stage Theatre
October 7 – 23, 2011  (11 performances)

This spine-tingling chiller is one of the longest running plays in London’s West End: “a truly nerve shredding experience." Prepare to be haunted by one of the best horror stories you will ever see on the stage. Mrs Drablow lived alone for more than 60 years in a gothic mansion on an island accessible only by a causeway at low tide. Something awful happened there, and, when he arrives at the house himself, awful things start to happen to Kipps too, not least the appearance of the woman in black. This thriller contains all the ingredients of a classic ghost story, complete with deserted mansion, haunted graveyards and locals who don't dare breathe a word of the horrors they have witnessed.

For details and tickets, go to the Woman in Black show page.

The Miss Firecracker Contest (comedy/drama)

By Beth Henley

Cantey V. Sutton Main Stage Theatre
February 10 – 26, 2012 (11 performances)

Carnelle Scott of Brookhaven, Mississippi, wants nothing more than to be crowned Miss Firecracker in the beauty pageant at the town's annual Independence Day celebration. To this end, she has whipped up a talent-show act in which she tap dances and somersaults to ''The Star- Spangled Banner'' while clenching a sparkler in her teeth. Welcome to an evening of humor - alternately Southern-Gothic absurdist, a bittersweet study of Southern characters and a slapstick send-up to Miss America ideals. From Beth Henley, author of Crimes of the Heart.

For details and tickets, go to the Miss Firecracker Contest show page.

The Crucible (classic drama)

By Arthur Miller

Cantey V. Sutton Main Stage Theatre
April 13 – 29, 2012 (11 performances)

Arthur Miller’s searing parable of intolerance, vengeance, moral courage and mass hysteria, The Crucible, is destined to resonate for centuries to come. Set during the Salem Witch Trials of the late 1600s and using the names of actual participants, The Crucible is universally seen as an allegory of the McCarthy era and the demand to “name names” during the anti-Communist witch hunts of the 1950s. But the moral of the story is far more universal. There are moments in the play that hit today’s audience with the force of a breaking news bulletin. Barely 50 years after it was written, Miller’s play has assumed the stature of a much older masterpiece. “Its wisdom seems ancient, its scope Shakespearean.”

For details and tickets, go to the Crucible show page.

The Boy Friend (musical)

Book, Lyrics and Music by Sandy Wilson

Cantey V. Sutton Main Stage Theatre
June 8 – 24, 2012 (11 performances)

The Jazz Age lives on in this light romantic spoof of 1920’s musical comedy. With its catchy tunes, period dances (including the Charleston) and winning sense of humor, it is a sparkling, tongue-in-cheek 1920’s romp in the spirit of No, No, Nanette. Written in the fifties as “a new musical of the twenties,” this is still considered the most successful, and witty of the send-up musicals, with the style of earlier, lighter-hearted and more disarming days.

For details and tickets, go to the Boy Friend show page.

Performed by Teens on Stage

Gaddy-Goodwin Teaching Theatre
July 15 – 24, 2011 (15 performances)

Summer has come to a crashing halt in the little town of Watertower. The kids don't want to be back in school; they are listless and bored. Suddenly, the classroom door bursts open and there, wearing pajamas and cowboy boots, stands red-headed Gooney Bird Greene! "Hi! My name is Gooney Bird Greene—that's like the color with a silent 'e' on the end and I like to be smack in the middle of everything!" She casts herself as the hero in the most improbable stories: how she arrived from China on a flying carpet, how she got a lovely pair of diamond earrings at the local palace, how she directed a symphony orchestra while driving through the center of town, and how her beloved cat was consumed by a cow. Are these stories really true? Of course they are because, as Gooney Bird proudly proclaims, she only tells "absolutely true stories!"

Merry Christmas, Strega Nona (musical)

Long ago, near a little town in Calabria, Italy lived an old witch called Strega Nona “Grandma Witch.” She knew magic and loved to use it to help people. Big Anthony, Strega Nona’s helper, didn’t like to work, never paid attention and almost always got into trouble. Every Christmas Eve, Strega Nona made a big feast for all the people of Calabria with no magic at all because she says, “No magic at Christmastime. Christmas has a magic all its own.” After Big Anthony nearly ruined Christmas by another one of his goofs, it seemed like nothing but a miracle could save Strega Nona’s feast. But Christmas is a time for miracles…and wonderful surprises too.

At last a musical that features a cast of nearly all girl performers! In the classic tradition of "let's put on a show," 13-year-old Edwina Spoonapple decides that she and her pals will do just that. Their “Advice-A-Palooza” extravaganza features such hilarious and endearing songs as ‘Put It in the Piggy,’ ‘Frankenguest’ and ‘Hola Lola,’ offering clever advice on kid-troubling issues that run the gamut from what to do when offered icky food to how to deal with a truly annoying brother.
