Where: Raleigh Little Theatre's Cantey V. Sutton Theatre at About the show: Lost in Yonkers, Neil Simon’s 1991, beautifully crafted, semi-autobiographical script, played for 780 performances at The Richard Rodgers Theatre. Among other awards, it won the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Drama; the 1991 Drama Desk Award for Best New Play; and the 1991 Tony Award for Best Play. In addition it garnered the 1991 Tony Awards for Irene Worth (Grandma), Mercedes Ruehl (Bella), and Kevin Spacey (Louis). The play was adapted into a film in 1993, with Worth and Ruehl reprising their roles, joined by Richard Dreyfuss as Louis and Jack Laufer as Eddie. It is 1942. World War II is in full swing. The action of the play is generated by a crisis in the life of Eddie Kurnitz, the father of Jay and Arty, the two young protagonists whose predicament is described in the title. Eddie's wife has recently died. During her illness, Eddie incurred enormous medical bills which he paid by borrowing money from a loan shark. His only hope of paying back the crippling debt is by taking a high paying, war-related job selling scrap iron “down South”, leaving Jay and Arty behind. The only place for Jay and Arty to live in his absence is in the cramped apartment above the family candy store in Yonkers, a slow, back-water suburb of New York City, with Eddie's mother, the tyrannical, ill-tempered Grandma Kurnitz. Grandma not only makes life miserable for the two boys but has terrorized all of her children, verbally abusing her slightly retarded daughter Bella, and scoffing at her small-time crook of a son, Louis. Bella finally stands up to her mother and life continues on with an icy understanding between the two. Of course, by the end of the play, we discover that there are mitigating circumstances in the behavior of the old woman. About the Auditions: Auditions will consist of readings from the script.
