Auditions for The Battle of Shallowford by Ed SimpsonFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: Wayne Olson, Office Manager What: Auditions for The Battle of Shallowford by Ed Simpson When: Monday, August 20 and August 21, 2007 at 7:30 PM (no appointments necessary) Where: Raleigh Little Theatre's Cantey V. Sutton Theatre at 301 Pogue Street Raleigh, NC 27607 (2 blocks off of Hillsborough Street) In Brief: The time: October, 1938, the night before Halloween The Place: A country store in the tiny hamlet of Shallowford, North Carolina It is a Sunday evening like all other Sunday evenings in this small rural community. A group of regulars assembles at Burton Mock's general store to share gossip and play checkers. In addition to the usual banter and horseplay, there is an undertone of romance in the air as Burton's pretty daughter, Ruthie, tries to decide between the attentions of the dashing football hero, Dewey, and those of the shy dreamer, Lonny. (Or, could it possibly be that her dreams lie elsewhere than in this country backwater?) As the regulars assemble, all is as usual, until one of them turns on the radio and they hear the shocking news that Martians have landed in New Jersey!!! And they have been sighted as close as Virginia, death rays a' blazing!!!! The men panic and form themselves into a sort of rag-tag, bob-tail militia, ready to do battle with the fearsome extraterrestrials. Only after a convoluted comedy of errors do they discover that they have been victims of Orson Wells' now famous Halloween prank (his radio play adaptation of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, which caused a nationwide panic when it was broadcast live in 1938). In addition to writing us a truly hilarious comedy of errors, Mr. Simpson has also given us some affectionately drawn portraits of some of those eccentric character-types that seem to thrive in the rarified atmosphere of our rural South. Auditions will consist of readings form the script. Perusal copies of the script are available for a 48 hour checkout from the RLT business office which is in the rear of the building and open Mon-Fri 9:00 AM-5:00 PM. Please call ahead (821-4579) to check on availability. You are here: Home > Press Releases > Auditions for The Battle of Shallowford by Ed Simpson |
