Honky Tonk AuditionsFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: Wayne Olson, Office Manager What: Auditions for The Honky Tonk Angels When: June 12 & 13, 2006 at 7:30 PM Where: Raleigh Little Theatre's Cantey V. Sutton "Main Stage" Theatre In Brief: About the Play Taking it's title from Kitty Wells' hit country ballad, Honky Tonk Angels ( by Ted Swindley, who brought us the hit musical revue Always.Patsy Cline) is a musical play that not only brings us knock-out performances of timeless country classics (including the title song, 9 to 5, Coal Miner's Daughter, I Will Always Love You, Delta Dawn, Silver Threads and Golden Needle, Harper Valley PTA and MANY more!!!!), but re-affirms the universal themes to be found in "country western music": love (all kinds, including "unrequited", "wrong-headed", "true", "ill-fated" etc, etc), patriotism, nostalgia, "work" songs, and various other forms of musical social commentary, as seen from a largely "working-class" perspective. Honky Tonk Angels is the story of three women, from very disparate backgrounds, who decide to follow their individual dreams to that Mecca of Country Music.. NASHVILLE. They meet on a bus bound for that city and, though they are not at first glance mutually compatible, they decide to make a go of it together. The first act introduces the three women and their dreams and their meeting the bus on the way to Nashville. The second act is comprised of their nightclub act as "The Honky Tonk Angels" at Hillbilly Heaven, a semi-seedy nightclub. The Roles Angela: [mid-thirties] A Texas housewife with a strong personality and a bear trap wit. She is trapped in a marriage to a man who expects his wife to be the "barefoot and pregnant" type. Well..that ain't going but so far with Angela! She is a real "earth-mother" comedienne type with a huge voice. Some of the songs she sings include: Stand By Your Man, Harper Valley PTA, and Almost Persuaded. Darlene: [early twenties] A "still-waters-run-deep" sort of gal. She grew up in a coal mining town in West Virginia and, when the mines played out, moved with her family to share-crop in the Mississippi Delta. She is pretty, sweet and a little vulnerable, and a "killer" vocalist. (It would be a plus if she could play some simple guitar). Some of the songs she sings include: Coal Miner's Daughter, Ode to Billy Joe, I Believe in Music, and Calling All Angels. Sue Ellen: [late thirties-early forties] A "citified" country girl, transplanted from Texas to the jungles of Los Angeles, she is twice divorced (and carries the scars to prove it) and trapped in a meaningless office job in a heartless environment. She is smart as a whip, attractive and frustrated. (She "might" also twirl batons and roller skate). And of course she has an amazing voice! Some of her songs include: 9 to 5, Rocky Top, Cleopatra, Queen of Denial. Audition Preparation Auditionees should prepare an appropriate country western ballad and an up-tempo number as well. If you can play any guitar, please bring one. If you twirl a baton, you might bring one of those as well. Perusal scripts are available from the business office. Call (919)821-4579 to reserve a copy.
