IN BRIEF: About the play Come see Shakespeare performed under the stars. Raleigh Little Theatre will present William Shakespeare's gender-bending, romantic farce Twelfth Night for two weekends from May 5-13 in its outdoor amphitheatre. This is Shakespeare at his best, a comedy for the common folk that is still filled with enough of that lovely language and wily wit to satisfy the intellect. Accessible and entertaining, Twelfth Night is a light-hearted, high-spirited romp full of intrigue and disguise, practical jokes and slapstick humor, pirates and castaways, lords and ladies. Some of Shakespeare's most memorable characters - a pair of shipwrecked twins, the roguish Sir Toby Belch, and the pompous Malvolio - help reveal the secrets of love, laughter and life. Guest Director Rod Rich, co-founder of Actors Comedy Lab, lends his deft comedic touch to this production of Twelfth Night. According to Rich, "We'll be setting one of Shakespeare's most musical comedies in 1919, the dawn of the jazz age. The first world war was over, women's skirts were rising along with a sense of their own liberty and newly won freedoms, and a new age was dawning which would lead to the Roaring 20's. Charlie Chaplin was already popular at the box office, and the first films of Buster Keaton were making their way into theatres. This seemed like the perfect era for one woman to masquerade as a man, and for another woman to aggressively woo the man she loves. As befits such an era, Shakespeare's songs will be recast in idioms ranging from Stephen Foster to ragtime, from piano to ukulele, with original arrangements." Shakespeare's Twelfth Night Under the Stars is sponsored by Capitol Broadcasting, Progress Energy, The News & Observer, Empire Properties, Two Men and a Truck, and the City of Raleigh Department of Parks & Recreation. RLT is also funded in part by the City of Raleigh Arts Commission and United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County.
