Really Rosie previewRaleigh Little Theatre Preview RLT’s “Really Rosie” Features a Book and Lyrics Raleigh Little Theatre will present a youth-theater production of Really Rosie, a 1975 animated television special and a 1980 Off-Broadway musical with book and lyrics by Brooklyn-born writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) and music by Manhattan-born singer/songwriter Carole King (Tapestry), on March 11-13, 17-20, and 24-27 in Gaddy-Goodwin Teaching Theatre).

She adds, “It is written by Maurice Sendak and Carole King — both very talented individuals. And it is situated in New York, where I’m from!” Rudolph reports, “The story takes place on Avenue P in Brooklyn, New York. A bunch of children are bored on a hot summer day. Rosie (Bailey Lee) decides that the best thing would be if they all put on a play of her life! But she needs them to audition to be sure they are good enough. So, all her friends – Kathy (Hannah Levinson), Pierre (Nate Sepic), Johnny (Daniel Murphy), Alligator (Bailey Hart), Curlie (Olivia Bouzigard), and Lillie (Morgan Goodman) take part in Rosie’s audition for her play entitled What Happened to Chicken Soup (Connor Gerney). Really Rosie also stars Rose Martin as Rosie’s Mother, Mary Kathryn Walston as Johnny’s Mother, and Gerrie Kouri as Kathy’s Mother. In addition to director Kathleen Rudolph, the Raleigh Little Theatre creative team for Really Rosie includes assistant director Mark Ridenour, choreographer Carrie Santiago, musical director Mary Kathryn Walston, technical director Jim Zervas, set designer Thomas Mauney, lighting designer Andy Parks, costume designer Jenny Mitchell, properties manager Mike McGee, sound designer Becca Easley, and stage manager Scott Wray. “Once the children enter at the top of the show,” director Kathleen Rudolph points out, “they never leave. So, it is imperative they each one of them is engaged in an activity throughout. The set is a brownstone with a few stories, which is a challenge for our Gaddy-Goodwin Theatre.” The show’s lighting is “colorful outside, a bit darker when they go to the cellar,” and its costumes are “kid clothing, except Rosie, who loves to dress up,” says Rudolph.
