Preview of The Prime Of Miss Jean BrodieRaleigh Little Theatre Preview In “The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie,” a charismatic teacher Raleigh Little Theatre will present The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, adapted by Jay Presson Allen from the novel by Muriel Spark, on Feb. 13-15 and 19-22 and Feb. 29-March 1. Long-time RLT artistic director Haskell Fitz-Simons will stage the show in RLT's Cantey V. Sutton Theatre. According to Raleigh Little Theatre: “[The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is] A story about acceptance, life, love, and betrayal. At the staid Marcia Blaine School for Girls in Edinburgh, a charismatic school teacher [Sandi Sullivan as Jean Brodie] is passionate in the application of her unorthodox teaching methods and in her dedication to her girls. The time is the 1930s, and Miss Brodie seems unaware that her admiration for Mussolini and Hitler might be considered unacceptable. When her illicit affairs with two male teachers [Tim Corbett as Teddy Lloyd and Joel Horton as Gordon Lowther] are revealed, she finds herself fighting to keep her job. Through it all, she believes in the unwavering support of her favorite pupils, with fatal consequences.” Set in Edinburgh, Scotland, now and from 1931 to 1936, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie made its Broadway debut, directed by Michael Langham, on Jan. 16, 1968 at the Helen Hayes Theatre, where it played 379 performances before closing on Dec. 14, 1968. The show starred Zoe Caldwell as Jean Brodie. Caldwell won the 1968 Tony Award® for Best Actress in a Play. The 1969 motion-picture version of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, directed by Ronald Neame from a screenplay by playwright Jay Allen, starred Maggie Smith as Jean Brodie, Robert Stephens as Teddy Lloyd, Pamela Franklin as Sandy, Gordon Jackson as Gordon Lowther, and Celia Johnson as Miss Mackay. Smith won the 1970 Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Rod McKuen earned an Oscar nomination Best Music, Original Song, for the song “Jean.” The Raleigh Little Theatre for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie includes Sandi Sullivan as Jean Brodie, Shiela Outhwaite as Miss MacKay, Tim Corbett as Teddy Lloyd, Joel Horton as Gordon Lowther, Alison Lawrence as Sister Helena, Shawn Smith as Mr. Perry, Kimberly Morris as Miss Campbell, and Scott Wray as Mr. McCready.
